There is a great book by Steve Johnson, called ‘where good ideas come from’ it's all about innovation.
It documents the history of INNOVATION from the 1600’s to present.
The seven patterns of innovations are as follows:
The Adjacent Possible.
Liquid networks. The old coffee houses where ‘double entry accounting’ & insurance were conceived.
The Slow Hunch. we all receive these from time to time, but do we act on them! You need to cultivate your hunches.
Serendipity. the power of accidental connection.
Error. to err & learn is good.
Exaptation. borrowing of ideas like social networking.
Platforms. Talks about volcanoes, coral reefs and twitter.com!
The final chapter splits all great ideas and inventions into quadrants, is the forth quadrant is interesting.
We all have these slow hunches about something that we can do better or make better. And it helps you to explore these ideas.
RMcH comment: Remember, we may not be able to invent HTML.( Tim Berners Lee's 2002) but by reading this book, it can push you to innovate within your own business, which can make them more efficient and use utilize those scarce resources. BTW if its qualifies as R&D you can get up to 30% of the cost back from revenue!
